This month, we held our first two Tū Tārake Leadership Development Wānanga to start bringing the next generation of rangatahi leaders through our kaupapa. As part of getting to know one another, we took part in waka ama, which was an awesome way to connect, build trust, and strengthen our teamwork. At our second wānanga, we completed a personality test, which gave us a chance to reflect on ourselves, our strengths, and how we can draw on those to work well as a group. It sparked some good conversations and helped us understand how we each contribute differently to different environments. We also spent some time volunteering in the MokoBoys māra and learning about planting, which turned out to be a really meaningful and hands-on experience. We began by preparing the garden area, working together to pull out weeds and clear the spaces where the new plants would go, kinda similar to how we ourselves were preparing for leadership development. It felt good to contribute physically to the māra, and it also gave us time to talk, connect, and learn from each other. During the session, we were introduced to the Rongo Bokashi composting system, learning how the flakes break down kai waste and help to create healthy soil for plants. It was interesting to see how natural processes support the growth of traditional healing plants, and it helped us understand why caring for the whenua is such an important part of planting. It was a productive session that helped build excitement for what’s coming next.
